See me laughing. That’s what I do when someone calls me an author. Yes, it’s always been my dream, but I still can’t keep from giggling over it.

Other things I am – a Christ-follower, a wife, a homeschooling mother of four, a graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, and a voracious reader.

Getting reading time isn’t easy. Seems like my family does more than our share of traveling. My husband is an insurance adjuster (I know, save the hate mail) and travels with the catastrophe team often. That’s allowed us to see a lot of the United States. True many times it’s in the middle of a hurricane or blizzard, but after spending three weeks in a hotel room with six people, you’ll brave anything to get out and see the sights – no matter how damaged they might be.

We also serve on the Missions Team at an amazing church, so we break out the passports frequently. Highlights include singing at a leper colony in India, holding church inside a Mexican prison and showing the Jesus film to a tribe in Senegal who’d never heard the gospel.

But I don’t have to go far away for unusual. My family provides plenty of colorful material with their love for practical jokes, pithy observations and strong agricultural roots. Because of the family business, a significant chunk of my life has been spent at sale barns and auctions – often behind the scales where I weigh pigs. I like to think of myself as a “redneck bluestocking” but I brought an entire marketing team’s discussion to a screeching halt when I said those words, so you didn’t hear it from me.

When I have spare time I love to talk books and quirky characters (real and fictional).

This Sensory Substitution Device uses the camera to gather visual data and then uses a rather nifty computer algorithm to translates this data into sound. With a little practice, blind users can identify complex objects, and even read words.

The invention is the invention of Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Dr. Amir Amedi, who you can see modeling the device in the picture up top. Amedi says that with only a relatively brief period of training, users can learn how to interpret a ton of information the "soundscapes" created by the computer algorithm, including the nature of complex everyday objects, the location and posture of people in a room, and even written letters and words.

February Real to Reel Movie

In our February Real to Reel Movie we live with the dolphins. Douglas Young, The Movie Guy, describes the movie as the story of: "a lonely and friendless boy finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. He becomes very attached to the dolphin when the tail must be taken off to save the dolphin's life. The boy believes the dolphin would be able to swim normally if it was given a prosthetic tale". The movie is scheduled for Thursday night February 9th at 6 p.m. and Saturday February 18th at 2 p.m.

This Week’s Technology Classes

Mon Feb 6, 5pm: Microsoft Word 3: We have learned all about saving, new documents, text editing, cut and paste and much more. In this class you will learn bullets, undo/redo, setting margins, page numbers, page breaks, headers/footers and print preview and printing your document.

Mon Feb 6, 6pm: Facebook for Your Business: This class will help you get up to speed on how to create, use and maintain a Facebook page of for your own business.

Tues Feb 7, 5:30pm: How to Search the Internet: Tired of having 100,000's of results appear whenever you search the internet. Learn some of the tricks librarian's use to make your search a lot more manageable.

Wed Feb 8, 11am: Windows Basics 2: With this class we will build on the knowledge of Windows Basic and learn more about the Start Menu, where you can launch any programs installed on your computer and also search for files (pictures, videos and music) We'll also demonstrate how to "pin" your favorite programs to the Start Menu or Taskbar.

Wed Feb 8, 2pm: Twitter Basics: An introduction to signing-up, creating a profile and using the service to find friends and/ or use Twitter for a news source. Patrons will have the opportunity to have two Twitter friends by the end of the class.

Thurs Feb 9, 5pm: Microsoft Publisher 1: Microsoft Publisher is a basic course covering the types of documents that can be created, how to modify templates and how to insert text and images.

Other Youth Activities

Along with the Robotics class, we have the following regular activities: Preschool Story Time – Tuesday @ 10am & Wednesday @ 4pm, Pat-a-Cake Pals- Thursday @ 10am, Family Story Time- Thursday @ 6:30pm and Toddler Time- Friday @ 10am.

The following is from the National Archives website.

The Raab Collection has donated an original audiotape recording to the National Archives that includes taped conversations on President Kennedy's official airplane, "Air Force One," during its flight following his assassination on November 22, 1963. The conversations were between pilots and other individuals on the flight and various individuals in Washington, DC, on the flight back from Dallas, TX, to Andrews Air Force Base. It is two hours and 22 minutes long.

So many movies, so little time! The following are a list, with limited comment, of the movies I watched in January.

Apollo 18 is an engrossing movie with a disappointing ending. Not surprising since we are dealing with the Department of Defense and a secret mission.

The Birds is an Alfred Hitchcock classic that I am growing to love again.

Captain America is a movie that I have looked forward to for some time. It was interesting to see how he was introduced in preparation for The Avengers movie.

Cowboys and Aliens I never thought of the Old West as a setting for an alien invasion movie, but it worked really well.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo thoroughly enjoyable for me, but I had read the books. The American version relied too much on the prior knowledge of the viewer to know the details of the story.

Psycho is another indulgence of my interest in Hitchcock movies.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes gave the story a strong sense of beginning. It was one of the best of the Planet of the Apes series.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Bo is also a man of God and widower whose life is destined to change when he meets the proud and hard-hearted slave girl, Ruth. Ruth has known nothing but servitude and brutality since being separated from her mother at age thirteen. Purchased and sold primarily for breeding, Ruth struggles to adjust to life outside of bondage. She wants no part of Bo's Godly devotion. Yet Bo is unlike any man she's known and her experiences with him will leave her forever changed.

A gripping slave era novel, Ruth's Redemption is a story of love, forgiveness, and redemption. Set against the backdrop of the Nat Turner Rebellion in Tidewater, Virginia, this novel shines the light of God's unconditional love in the darkness of a culture's cruel socially accepted inhumanity.

January Reading List

One of my resolutions this year was to report on what I have been reading each month. This is my list for January.

Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom was our first book club book for the year and a positive start to the new year. Our group has read all of this "inspirational" books, but they never realized that he was a sports reporter before he began his spiritual pilgrimage.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford is a well written story that is good all the way through.

On Writing by Stephen King is a book from about 2001. It is part biography and part writer's instruction. While I primarily enjoy his movies, I have grown fond of his written work through the years as well.

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay is the second World War II era book I have read this year. This work explores the round-ups in France during the Vichy occupation of France.

Unbroken by Lauren Hildenbrand deals with the survival of American troops, who were shot down over the Pacific. This is one of the most beautiful and surprising stories I have read in some. time.

The following was published this week in the Dakota County Star. Thank them for supporting the work of the South Sioux City Public Library.

Special Movie Presentation in Memory of Audrey Murphy
The library will host a Special Movie on Wednesday February 1st at 6:30 p.m. We visit the lawless frontier village of Shinbone, a town plagued by a larger-than-life nemesis, Liberty Valance. The town lawyer and a local rancher share the same desire to rid the town of Liberty Valance and winning the hand of the same woman. The movie stars Lee Marvin, James Stewart and John Wayne. The movie is shown in memorial to Audrey Murphy, who was both a supporter of the library and a great John Wayne fan.

Technology Classes
Mon. Jan 30, 10am Word 2: We will add to our knowledge from Word 1 and expand a little bit more. We will discuss the ruler, insert/overtype, cut and paste, using the clipboard, and paragraph styles.

Mon. Jan 30, 2pm Using Reference Sources: By using reference tools, we will cover how to find information on Wilson Web, eLibrary and HeritageQuest.

Mon. Jan 30, 6pm Your Library Web Page: Learn everything that you have available on the library web page. How to renew books, how to search for jobs, find out important information, what books your favorite author has written. All this information will be revealed and more.

Tues. Jan 31, 6pm Excel 3: If you need to insert a chart into an Excel worksheet, this class will teach you how. We will also talk about page breaks and printing your document.

Wed Feb 1, 11am: Windows Basics: We will start at the very beginning of Windows 7 with an introduction to the Desktop, Start Menu and the all new Taskbar.

Wed Feb 1, 2pm: Search Engines: Covers some of the search engines other than Google, Yahoo and Bing. Students will learn about Collarity, Ixquick, Ask.com and Local.com.

Youth Activities
We have our regular youth activities this week: Preschool Story Time Tuesday @ 10am and Wednesday @ 4pm, Pat-a-Cake Story Time Thursday @10am, Spanish Family Story Time Thursday @ 6:30pm and Toddler is held on Friday @ 10am.

Football Withdrawals
If you are really going to miss a football game this weekend you can try one of these titles. I Beat the Odds: from Homelessness, to the Blind Side and Beyond by Michael Oher is the story of Michael Oher of the Baltimore Ravens, whose story was popularized by the book and movie The Blind Side.

When Pride Still Mattered by David Maraniss is the story of legendary coach Vince Lombardi, who coached the Green Bay Packers to the very first NFL/ AFL championship in 1967.

The Sacred Acre: the Ed Thomas Story by Mark A. Tabb tells the story of the community of Parkersburg, Iowa, which in the same year survived an F-5 tornado and the murder of their high school football coach, Ed Thomas. This is a tremendous story from a local perspective.
